History of the Branch

The Royal Canadian Legion – 1083 Pape Avenue

The Todmorden branch of the Royal Canadian Legion was one of the first Legions of its kind formed in Canada.    The organization began right after World War I. in 1919, under the name of the Great War Veterans Association.

At first, the meetings were held in a double garage on Gowan behind the Bank of Nova Scotia but later moved into the basement of William Burgess School. The name of the association was changed around this time to the British Empire Service League.

In 1927, across the street from the school, the present Legion Hall was constructed with labour and funds raised by its hundred or so members. After the Second World War, the ranks of the members swelled to over 1500.

In the early 1960’s the name was changed to the Royal Canadian Legion. Additions to the building were made in the 30’s, 50’s and 70’s.
